Coming up next is an extraordinary event incalcated with the fears of halloween!
This event will occur straight after the star-gazing session held on the 15th October (Friday Night). It is a 12-hour non-stop event which will be happening in school, a night with fun-filled activities and games not to be missed!

Time: 7pm - 7am
Supper will be provided.

For interested Participants,
Indemnity forms will be issued to you this coming Friday (01/10/10), and are to be returned (slotted under the clubroom door) by 6th October 2010 - Wednesday 00:00.

These forms will be submitted to the Student Affairs Office on Thursday Morning so as to acknowledge your stay and ensure your safety during the 12-hour stay in NYP. Hence, late submission will be voided as they need time to process. We seek your understanding and coorperation to submit the forms on time.

Please also bring along $2 cash on Friday (01/10/10) to support the happening of this event, even if you're not interested. (Treat it as club fund, we're in this together!) :D

Those who are not able to attend this week's Star-gazing session but are interested to participate, Kindly collect the forms from the files hung outside the club room door, fill them up and slot under the clubroom door with a $2 note attached to it by 6th October 2010 - Wednesday 00:00.

The National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) Council would like to invite you to attend the talk cum presentation on the Mars Exploration by Dr Sebastian Gautsch
and a reception thereafter on Friday, 13 August 2010 from 3.00pm to 5.00pm at the Singapore Polytechnic Auditorium, 500 Dover Road, Singapore139651. You would
be given the opportunity to ask Dr Gautsch on his work and successful operation on Mars Exploration.

Dr Sebastian Gautsch received his M.A. Sc degree in Electronical Physics from the University of Neuchatel, Switzerland in 1998. He obtained his PhD degree in the field
of micro-mechanical systems from the Institute of Microtechnology (IMT), University of Neuchatel, Switzerland in 2001. His PhD thesis was done in collaboration with the
Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, USA and led to the successful operation of an Atomic Force Microscope on the famous Phoenix Mission to Mars in 2008.
Dr Gautsch is currently a team leader at EPFL IMT SAMLAB in the field of Tools for Nanoscience. Dr Gautsch has more than 34 publications on his work.

HELLO!

I really wanna thank the people, who've sent in their details on time for the YOG - Cheering the flames event. We've managed to get enough people to fill up the list. We have exactly 20 people on the list. As such, please please please attend the practices that has been assigned in the email.

It will be held every Tues & Fri starting from 6th July for flashmobbers,

TIME: 6-9pm
VENUE: Sports hall (Blk E lvl 2 - Student card required for entrance)

As for motivators, 6 & 9th July is compulsory for you to attend. If you have further queries, please contact the person in-charged or ask them directly on the 6th July.

I understand that the flashmobs practice clashes with the bi-weekly stat-gazing sessions. As such, those who are involved in the YOG will be excused from Astronomy until 7 Aug, provided you attend the dance practices.

How was Orientation camp? I hope all of you brought back several useful knowledge about astronomy! (: Of course not forgetting the friendship we've forged in such a short period of time. Although we do not know each other well, but i believe that there will be certain memories which will remain in you!

I'd like to thank all my committee and sub-committee members for all your help! The camp wuldnt be successful without you guys! (: I'd also like to thank all the freshies for actively participating in all activities! :D We'll not be able to run the camp without the campers ya!

Invitation to AstroChallenge 2010

Dear Sir/Mdm in charge: The AstroChallenge 2010 Committee cordially invites your school to participate in the 8th Annual Singapore Astronomy Competition - AstroChallenge 2010 to be held on the 10th and 12th of June 2010.

AstroChallenge is an annual astronomy competition jointly organised by the Astronomical Societies of National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University. The competition is specially tailored and targeted at students in Secondary Schools, Junior Colleges and Polytechnics. AstroChallenge aims to enhance students' interest and knowledge in astronomy, and hopes to foster closer inter-school ties through the common interest of astronomy. Students will be exposed to a comprehensive array of questions that range from theoretical astronomy to practical astronomy.

Please refer to the Appendix for more information with regard to: - Schedule of events and information on competition rounds - Entry requirements - Registration - payment and procedure Enquiries can be made to astrochallenge@gmail.com.

We hope to present a rigorous, challenging and fun competition for you and your students.

Appendices
Schedule of Events and Information on Competition Rounds 1.
Rounds for Day 1* Data Analysis - Team round
Project Round - Teams will prepare a project beforehand for presentation.

The title and other details concerning the project will be emailed to participating schools at a later date.

Observation - This round is only for participants from the Senior Category. It will be an inter-school event, so participating schools will only have to send one telescope regardless of the number of teams sent. Schools will not be allowed to use a computerized scope. Necessary arrangements will be made if the school is unable to send an approved telescope. Please indicate the specifications of the telescope to be used in the registration form.

2. Rounds for Day 2* MCQ - Individual Round .
Finals - There will be final rounds for all three categories, namely: Senior Category, Junior and Newcomer Category.

Details of the rounds, and rules and regulations for the competition will be sent in by end May via email to the teacher-in-charge and respective team leaders. Please ensure that you will be contactable via email.

Entry Requirements

1. Schools are free to send in any number of teams per category. .
Senior Category Includes all Junior Colleges, Polytechnics, and Institutes .
Junior Category Includes all Secondary Schools Schools with Integrated Programme (IP) may also send their students in the Junior Category if the students are 16 years old and below as of 1 Jan 2009 .

Newcomer Category Only for secondary schools that have not participated in AstroChallenge for more than 2 times consecutively; these schools are allowed to send students from Secondary 1-2.

A School in the Junior Category may send ONLY their Secondary 1 students to the Newcomer Category if they wish to.

2. Only one team from each school can qualify for the finals of each category, i.e. IP schools can have one team in the Junior Category finals and another team in Senior Category finals.

Registration -Payment and Procedure
1. There will be a $60 registration fee per team for Senior and Junior Category and $40 per team for Newcomer Category, which can be paid by cash only.

Payment should be made on the first day of the event itself.

NYP Event: Expedition in Malaysia

Hi all,

There will be this upcoming expedition the school is planning to go Malaysia from 6th to 9th October. This is not an astronomy event but it is organised by my class.

Malaysia is actually quite dark, so at night we can see quite a lot of stars clearly. I strongly encourage you all to take part in this since we missed the overseas astronomy trip in June due to H1N1. And for those who are doing NYAA, this is a really good chance for you to fulfil the expedition part.

There will be rope elements and games like that, so it will be a fun trip. The cost will be about $200, and you are allowed to use your PSEA funds. If you would like to check if you have sufficient funds, please call 62600777. There will be a computer-generated message to guide you through to find out your balance.

Upcoming Event: Solar Eclipse

Hi all, I'm sure you guys should have heard about the upcoming solar eclipse, so here's some information about it.

On Wednesday, 22nd July 2009, a solar eclipse will occur. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow begins in India and crosses through Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and China. In some parts of these countries, observers will experience a total solar eclipse. In Singapore, observers will not experience a total eclipse but a partial one (weather permitting). At maximum, about 10% of the Sun will be covered.

Start of eclipse: 8.40am
Maximum eclipse: 9.11am
End of eclipse: 9.44am

We will be having a solar eclipse observation on that day. For students who do not have lessons, and are interested, please report to the club room at P701 at 8am sharp. For students who have lessons and are interested to go, please e-mail Mr Yeh Ong Chua (our club's advisor) and see if you are allowed to be excused from class. If you need his e-mail address, please go to the student portal and search for it as I cannot publish his e-mail address on a public blog.

Hey all, I'm helping the school promote the upcoming events. You may have read about these events in the newspaper; NYP in collaboration with H-TWO-O, will be organising two events in NYP Campus on 18th July 09. They are:

Should you like to race against a bigger field of biathletes, you may choose to take part in the Open categories. Cost for Youth (under 21) and Open (Above 21) is $20 per person. Registration and payment can be done through www.yeos.com.sg. Your siblings or friends who are not current NYP students or staff may take part in the open category.

FUTSAL
For Futsal, it will cost $20 per person for a team of five. There is no special rate for NYP students as the event is run by an events management company. Registration can be made through www.yeos.com.sg

Goodie Bags
Goodie bags will be provided for all who have sign up, be it NYP or Open to public categories. NYP students who take part in NYP Biathlon (NYP category) will also be entitled to NYP Biathlon events' T-shirt. Winners can expect to win attractive prizes.

So do participate if you can. And also, they might need volunteers to help out, so if you guys are keen, please let me know and I will pass your details to the organizing committee. This may not be related to Astronomy but it is a very good chance to expose yourself and also do your part for the school.

As you all know, the Desaru trip is cancelled due to the Influenza A case. There will be an upcoming event to replace this trip for all members. We will be inviting a guest speaker to give a lecture about astronomy, so all members are strongly encouraged to attend this overnight star-gazing session. Here are the details of the event.

As some of us might know, there will be an annular Eclipse on the 26th Jan 2009
It is visible across parts of Indonesia. Partially visible in Singapore. At maximum eclipse, approximately 80% of the sun will be covered by the New Moon.
So for those who is interested in the Eclipse, below is the time that i had found out.

Eclipse begins: 1630hrs
Max Eclipse: 1749hrs
Eclipse ends: 1858hrs

All times refer specifically to SIngapore time (Time zone:GMT +8hrs). Times will be different for countries located in other time zone.

Orionids Star Party 2007

Cheers! It is the time of the year for the Orionid meteor shower. The Orionids generally begin on October 15 and end on October 29, with maximum occurring during the morning hours of October 20-22. Observers in the Southern Hemisphere will be expected to see around 40 meteors per hour. In additional to that, we might (emphasis on the word "might") be joining other schools. Damn, I am excited already! ~~For those who are interested, please feel free to contact us.~~ (Sorry, due to over response, we are out of vacancy. Aww, but fret not you are always welcome to join our other event lining up)

For those we are joining us, here is the brief shedule. Registration will start at 11.30 a.m. at P703, NYP. We will start our day by having lunch in school (not provided) before heading towards Marine Parade Community Building (bus provided). We then be participating in some interactive lecture, games and astronomy movie. This would be followed by a dinner (also provided) before heading towards East Coast Park (bus provided). We will then be participating in field tutorial on how to recognise constellations in the sky and telescope handing. For those ho need to go off early (aww, )= ), you could be dismissed at 9.30 pm (please note that bus will not be provided). For those who camp overnight, bus would be provided back to NYP at 10 am.

Total Lunar Eclipse August 28, 2007

The moon was shy, hidden by the threatening clouds island wide, on that very special night which leaves us to much disappointment. No nice moon, no romantic nights. ='( sob sob. Alright, the following video taken from hawaii is what we are suppose to see on that supposedly starry night. Enjoy!

That fiery red ball, just so ultra-awesome aint it! Now, wait, how does that occur? Let me explain (I will try my best to make it light)

As what we had been taught in primary school science, moon does not produce light but simply reflect sunlight and it orbits around the earth once every 29 and a half days (Just for information, the word "month" is derived from the Moon's 29.5 day period). The moon would appear as if it is changing shape in the sky as in revolve around mother earth. (This is also the reason why juliet forbit romeo to swear his love upon moon, for its ever changing) This is caused by the different angles from which we see the bright part of the Moon's surface. (The most common incorrect concept given for the change of moon shape is that we are seeing the shadow of the Earth on the Moon! tsk!)

Now back to the main point, an eclipse of the moon only occur at full moon and if the moon passes through earth's shadow. The shadow is composed of two cone-shaped components, one nested inside the other. The outer or penumbral shadow is a zone where the Earth blocks part of the Sun's rays from reaching the Moon. Whereas, the inner or umbral shadow is a region where the Earth blocks all direct sunlight from reaching the Moon.

Now you might be wondering "If the Moon orbits Earth every 29.5 days and lunar eclipses only occur at Full Moon, then why don't we have an eclipse once a month during Full Moon?". The Moon's orbit around Earth is actually tipped about 5 degrees to Earth's orbit around the Sun. This means that the Moon spends most of the time either above or below the plane of Earth's shadow. No eclipse takes place. But two to four times each year, the Moon passes through some portion of the Earth's penumbral or umbral shadows and eclipses occurs.

During a total lunar eclipse, the Earth blocks the Sun's light from reaching the Moon. While the Moon remains completely within Earth's umbral shadow, indirect sunlight still manages to reach and illuminate it. However, this sunlight must first pass deep through the Earth's atmosphere which filters out most of the blue colored light. The remaining light is a deep red or orange in color and is much dimmer than pure white sunlight. Therefore appearing red in the above video.

If the Earth had no atmosphere, then the Moon would be completely black during a total eclipse. Instead, the Moon can take on a range of colors from dark brown and red to bright orange and yellow. The exact appearance depends on how much dust and clouds are present in Earth's atmosphere. Total eclipses tend to be very dark after major volcanic eruptions since these events dump large amounts of volcanic ash into Earth's atmosphere.

Sorry for being long winded! Therefore, such awe striking view was indeed a rare sight. One have to depend on atmosphere, location, timing (that killer exam period, rah!)and weather (damn, thats what we lack of!). So jealous of those guys in hawaii. Nevermind, lets try our luck to catch it again next year!

Exam finally over (cheers!). It was once again the long awaited holiday. Pondering how to spend your excess time? no worries, you have just ask the right person! I have this 50-episode show to introduce, each episode take about half an hour, so I guess that would help killing some of your time. 24 Apr 2007One of the largest panoramic images ever taken with Hubble's cameras has been released to celebrate the 17th anniversary of the launch and deployment of the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. The image shows a 50 light-year-wide view of the tumultuous central region of the Carina Nebula where a maelstrom of star birth - and death - is taking place.
Hubble's new view of the Carina Nebula shows the process of star birth at a new level of detail. The bizarre landscape of the nebula is sculpted by the action of outflowing winds and scorching ultraviolet radiation from the monster stars that inhabit this inferno. These stars are shredding the surrounding material that is the last remains of the giant cloud from which the stars were born.

This immense nebula contains a dozen or more brilliant stars that are estimated to be at least 50 to 100 times the mass of our Sun. The most rich and extensive one is the variable star eta Carinae, seen at far left. Eta Carinae is in the final stages of its brief eruptive lifespan, as shown by two billowing lobes of gas and dust that foretell its upcoming explosion as a titanic supernova.
The fireworks in the Carina region started three million years ago when the nebula's first generation of newborn stars condensed and ignited in the middle of a huge cloud of cold molecular hydrogen. Radiation from these stars carved out an expanding bubble of hot gas - a cavity. The island-like clumps of dark clouds scattered across the nebula are nodules of dust and gas that have so far resisted being eaten away by photoionisation by the stellar radiation.
The hurricane-strength blast of stellar winds and blistering ultraviolet radiation within the cavity is now compressing the surrounding walls of cold hydrogen. This is triggering a second stage of new star formation.

Our Sun and Solar System may have been born inside such a cosmic furnace 4600 million years ago. In looking at the Carina Nebula we are seeing star formation as it commonly occurs along the dense spiral arms of a galaxy.

This immense nebula is an estimated 7500 light-years away in the southern constellation Carina, the Keel of the old southern constellation Argo Navis, the ship of Jason and the Argonauts from Greek mythology.

This image is an immense (29 566 x 14 321 pixels) mosaic of the Carina Nebula assembled from 48 frames taken with Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. The Hubble images were taken in the light of ionized hydrogen. Colour information was added with data taken at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. Red corresponds to sulphur, green to hydrogen, and blue to oxygen emission.

To all who joined us for our event yesterday!

It was a pity that it rained yesterday night and the sky became cloudy after that. And because of the rain, we were unable to stargaze.

What was infuriating was that the sky cleared after we ended our event! When we looked up at the sky at the school gate, we could see the belt of Orion so clearly! Perhaps we need to do some "feng shui" adjustment for our clubroom to change our luck. All right, just a lame joke. =P

Hansen had not sent me the pictures taken for the event. I will post them once he sends them to me. =D

Lastly, thanks for the precious feedback! Hope to see you again for our future events!

I was searching the internet for pictures which I could use to decorate for the poster for our advertisement for the Observatory Visit (5 Jan 07) and I found this picture. I fell in love with it at first sight! You know the feeling? Suddenly you felt a rush of adrenaline through your body, your eyes twinkle and you go WOW... It's beautiful!

I wanted very much to go on with the description, but decide that I shall not do that. Just in case anyone of you thought I want a picture as my boyfriend. Worse! If anyone thought I have altered mental health (in other word-insane). =P

The vast sky above us and the land on our feet are remarkable to each other. The picture above speaks the words. Don't you agree? =)

Night out at East Coast

Yesterday was the first event we had after the 2006/2007-committee members took over the club. All the committee members were present except Yanting, Deep and Xiao Ming. Others who went are 3 of our ex-seniors, Alex, Felicia and Han Sheng; and 5 members. Some members of Singapore poly astro club went too!

We reached the place at 1945 hrs. While some of us ate dinner at the Macdonald, Edward and Boon went to buy a birthday cake for our President, Wei Hong. His birthday was on Thursday. Though the wishes and celebration come a little late, I think he hasn’t mind a bit. It’s always the thought that count is it not? His face remained cool and calm when the cake was being brought in, but I guess, deep in his heart, he must be having a tumult of emotions. =P

The sky was clear and the moon lady was bright! We were able to find the stars of the ORION, CANIS MAJOR, the eye of the TAURUS and some stars of GEMINI !

While we were stargazing, two policemen on petrol approached us. It turned out to be a hilarious scenario. Before the police could ask anything, Wei Hong introduce to them who we are and what we were doing there. It seem as if Wei Hong had been caught many times afore that he knew what the police would ask!

Throughout the night, we stargazed, played cards and went night cycling. Then at around 4am, a few of us went to take a nap. Strange it was. There was not even a gust of sea breeze that night and no mosquito!

In the morning, we had breakfast at Macdonald and then sat and played cards for like 5 hours? Just to wait for the bus! We were all like living zombies! The worse thing is that, the bus was suppose to arrive at 10.30am, but it did not turn up. And when we contact the driver, he said he was at NYP! Why would the thought that we are at NYP! He drove us to East Coast yesterday evening! So in the end, the bus came only at 11.30am. At least, the uncle apologized for his mistake. Apology accepted! Forgiveness is a virtue is it not? =)

What’s next then? Home sweet home, of course!

Anyway, a word to end off – stunts. Those who stayed till morning will know what there’s supposed to mean! *Wink* Haha..
